Maybe you’ve moved into the gym already? Static indoor trainer? Back on public transport? If you’re commuting bike is back in the shed – why? I too feel the extra effort on those dark, cold and wet days (and sometimes all 3) – why not, I’m human and don’t particularly like being uncomfortable. But I do get that buzz of making it into work or completing that ride and the kudos you get too. And it’s rarely that bad, once you are out and ‘in it’. Some basic rules for me; ice is a no go – the extra risk is not worth the recovery period of a fall and potential damage to your bike. Luckily, living in London, this is probably 5 days a year! Crazy wind – 20 mph is okay for me but when it’s gusting 30+, trainers on, and bike stays home. Otherwise, I have a good waterproof and warm jacket, over trousers and gloves. And some super reflective stuff. Sailors say – ‘there’s no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothing’. So now you don’t have an excuse. Keep your bike in good order with an extra service – the weather takes it out of your nice bike. Then remember your lights, watch out for puddles/leaves covering holes, extend your braking distances and embrace the season and soon it’ll be spring. Until next time, #handlebars_haynes
